Your carbon footprint, calculated from real consumption
CMT turns each site's consumption into CO₂ equivalents, following the GHG Protocol guidelines to measure scopes 1, 2 and 3.
What is a company's carbon footprint?
It is the total greenhouse gas emissions an organization produces through its activity, expressed in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e).
The most widely used standard to measure it is the GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol), which groups emissions into three scopes by where they come from.
The three scopes, and which CMT data feeds each one
- Scope 1: Direct emissions
- From sources the company owns or controls: fuels burned at your sites or in your vehicles, and natural gas.In CMT: Fuels and gas
- Scope 2: Purchased energy
- Indirect emissions from the energy the company buys, mainly the electricity its network uses.In CMT: Electricity, including renewable supply
- Scope 3: Value chain
- Other indirect emissions that happen outside the company, such as treating the waste its operations generate. In CMT: Waste and any other services you add
How it's calculated in CMT
The basic calculation
emissions (tCO₂e) = consumption × emission factor
- 1
You record consumption
Electricity, gas, fuels, water and waste for each site, by period.
- 2
It becomes CO₂e
Each consumption figure is multiplied by its emission factor to get tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
- 3
Grouped by scope
Emissions are grouped into scopes 1, 2 and 3, by site and for the whole network.
- 4
You set targets
With a measured baseline, you set concrete reduction goals.
Why start from real consumption
- Data from every site, not estimated averages.
- One source to manage both costs and emissions.
- Periodic measurement, not a once-a-year exercise.
About carbon footprint
What are scopes 1, 2 and 3?
They are the three GHG Protocol categories. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned sources, such as fuels and gas. Scope 2 covers purchased energy, mainly electricity. Scope 3 covers other indirect emissions in the value chain, such as waste treatment.
What is CO₂ equivalent?
It is the unit that lets you add up different greenhouse gases. Emissions of gases such as methane or nitrous oxide are converted into the amount of CO₂ that would have the same warming effect.
How does CMT calculate the carbon footprint?
CMT takes each site's recorded consumption, converts it into CO₂ equivalents using emission factors, and groups it into scopes 1, 2 and 3 following the GHG Protocol guidelines.
Does CMT account for renewable energy?
Yes. Santander Argentina, for example, monitors its electricity in CMT including renewable supply, together with water, gas, fuels and waste.
